UK and Germany sign ‘landmark’ defence treaty

Britain and Germany will sign, what the UK government is calling a “landmark defence agreement” aimed at boosting security, investment and jobs. Under the agreement the German defence company, Rheinmetall will open a new factory in the UK to manufacture barrels for artillery guns – supporting 400 jobs. Both countries will work together to develop a new long range missile, and drones. German maritime surveillance aircraft will also periodically fly patrols of the North Atlantic from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland. Labour promised to build closer military ties with Germany whileRead more

In Kursk, Ukraine soldiers find disillusioned Russians and inexperienced troops

When Ukrainian troops started massing in the Sumy region in the country’s northeast during the early weeks of the summer, it was clear some kind of operation was in the works, a Ukrainian soldier recently told CBC News. But he didn’t realize his country was on the brink of a large, secretive and carefully planned incursion into Russia.  “We didn’t know, but we were feeling something special about the situation,” said the soldier, who wanted only to be identified as Wolverine, in an exclusive interview with CBC. Over the past two weeks, Ukraine says itsRead more

Peace talks tomorrow if Russia leaves Ukraine – Zelensky

Kyiv will hold peace talks with Russia tomorrow if Moscow pulls out of all Ukrainian territory, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said. But speaking at the close of a summit for peace in Switzerland, he said Russian President Vladimir Putin would not end the war and had to be stopped “in any way we can”, whether by military or diplomatic means. Western aid was not enough to win the war, he added, but the summit had shown that international support for Ukraine was not weakening. The meeting concluded with dozens ofRead more

Canada promised an air defence system to Ukraine 18 months ago. It still hasn’t arrived

Ukraine’s minister of foreign affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, says his country is in urgent need of weapons and wishes the air defence system Canada promised more than a year ago was already in Ukraine. Canada announced plans in January 2023 to donate a $406-million surface-to-air missile defence system, but there’s still no delivery date. “Of course, we wish the system was already in Ukraine because we are in a situation where every piece of air defence matters,” Kuleba said when asked by CBC News at the conclusion of the Ukraine peace summit in SwitzerlandRead more

NATO chief chides Ukraine allies for delays that helped Russia

NATO countries haven’t delivered what they promised to Ukraine in time, the alliance’s chief said Monday, allowing Russia to press its advantage while Kyiv’s depleted forces wait for military supplies to arrive from the U.S. and Europe. “Serious delays in support have meant serious consequences on the battlefield” for Ukraine, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told a news conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Outgunned, Ukraine’s troops have struggled to fend off Russian advances on the battlefield. They were recently compelled to make a tactical retreat from three villagesRead more

U.S. prepares to rush $1B US in military aid to Ukraine, as Congress approves bills

A sweeping foreign aid package easily passed the U.S. Congress late Tuesday after months of delay, clearing the way for fresh Ukraine funding amid advances from Russia’s invasion force and Kyiv’s shortages of military supplies. The U.S. Senate voted 79 to 18 to approve four bills passed by the House of Representatives on Saturday, after House Republican leaders abruptly switched course last week and allowed a vote on the $95 billion US in mostly military aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, and U.S. partners in the Indo-Pacific. The four bills were combinedRead more

Ukraine hits Russian city, oil refinery on 2nd day of presidential vote, governor says

A Ukrainian missile attack killed two people in western Russia, and a separate drone strike set an oil refinery ablaze on Saturday, an official said, during the second day of an election that Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused Kyiv of trying to disrupt. The Ukraine war has cast a shadow over voting in the three-day presidential election, which is all but certain to hand Putin six more years in the Kremlin but has been marked by scattered acts of protest. The head of the electoral commission, Ella Pamfilova, said there hadRead more
